2002.02.14: Concentric Rainbows!

Tree and I were driving to Sis' place. We looked out the window and saw a rainbow -- vivid and bright against the sky. It was the most amazing rainbow that either of us had ever seen. We could see the entire rainbow, end to end, across the eastern sky. Then, to our astonishment, we saw another rainbow, larger but fainter than the first, arching over the first.

A double rainbow. A pair of concentric prismatic arcs gloriously painting the sky.

We wanted to pull over so we could soak in the vision and savor it without worrying about crashing. But before we could do anything the sun ducked behind a cloud and the rainbow vanished. Etherial. Precious.

next time, look for number three. they always come in threes, although unless they are really bright, you won't see numbers two and three.

Wow. Really? I did look for a third, but I didn't see it. I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks.
