2003.02.14: Demonstrating Mastery

The class in which I got a B- is a methods class. We learned and applied methods and techniques.

I talked to my professor about my lower-than-expected grade. He gave his rationale. There was no mistake and I won't get any points back. Though I'm sure that his grading system sounds reasonable to him, it sounds to me like he has hidden requirements and a deduct-points-for-not-being-psychic policy.

During the course of our conversation, my professor said to me "It's clear that you've mastered the skills." Sooooo...mastery of skills does not get you an "A" in a methods class? WTF?

Don't feel too badly... Einstein is said to have failed math in school, but he turned out alright anyway... ;-P

In any case, I agree with you that the prof seemed to be saying, "Yes, you have mastered the methods well. However, I am still not going to give you a decent grade." It may be that his so-called "fine prints" got in the way, and he didn't want to admit that he messed up.

This is a favorite technique used by the Pointy-Haired Boss and every other boss worldwide...
