Comments Fixed (Kinda)

11:27 AM PST :: comments: 0

My site no longer throws a 403 Forbidden page at you when you post a comment. But it now requires that you do a preview before you post, otherwise my site hangs. What a pain. Sorry.

At least it kinda works now.

Happy Beheading Day!

10:16 AM PST :: comments: 0

Today we commemorate the beheading of two Saints, both named Valentine (but only one beheaded on Feb. 14th).

Inscrutably, we do this with cards, flowers and chocolates.

In Defence of Affirmative Action (part 4)

02:43 AM PST :: comments: 5

There is fundamental assumption regarding Affirmative Action that I'd like to challenge. The assumption is that if race is taken into consideration at all, then the process is racist. The logic then follows that admissions officers should not collect race information at all and merely use academic data to determine admissions. Therefore, a "colorblind" policy would be non-racist. I'd like to challenge this assumption with one principle and two examples. [more]

(Note: This post was originally intended to be a comment in response to Jim's comment on my post from two days ago. Due to its length and my difficulties with commenting, I've decided to post instead of commenting.)

Jim - it sounds like you are in favor for Affirmative Action for jobs, but not for schools. Correct? [more]

Technical Difficulties

The commenting system looks like it is a little broken. It throws a 403 Forbidden page at you when you submit a comment. I don't know why. The comment does get posted to the page, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm working on it. Sorry.

[Update: Still throws 403's at you. Still actually posts the comment. Still working on it.]

In Defence of Affirmative Action (part 2)

Enjelani made some very good points in her comments to a recent post of mine. She says:
if affirmative action is designed to level the playing field, then it needs to do so by the right criteria. Tamika has a weight strapped to her back when she runs the race: why? because she's poor? because she grew up getting shot at? because she had a single mother and six siblings for a family? these are reasons to give someone extra points in the admissions process. not the color of her skin. yes, the people with these disadvantages are disproportionately minorities. but to award them points based on genetics, rather than economic and social circumstance, can only heighten racial tension. if Jill grew up getting shot at, shouldn't she get points too?

Greymatter Problems

05:35 PM PST :: comments: 0

Apologies to anyone who has visited this site in the past day or so. I've been having trouble with my Greymatter installation. While I was trying to update my templates, Greymatter managed to corrupt them. I had made a backup just before I started making changes, so I thought I was fine. Turns out I backed up the wrong files. Grrrrrr. I found a three month old backup, so I was able to get some working templates. But I lost all the the changes to the templates that I'd made in that time. I've managed to recreate most of them, but sadly, not all.

In the past few hours, I got my site working again, and I made a few changes that I've been wanting to do for a while. But while I was working on that, this site looked horrible and I lost some comments too. Ooops.

I have figured out specifically how Greymatter corrupts my templates, so in the future, it shouldn't be so bad. But the corruption happens every time I try to make any changes to any of the templates and it takes a lot of extra time to uncorrupt my templates.

So I have three choices. 1) Suffer a lot whenever I want to change my templates. 2) Never change my templates again (and see just how much I can alter stuff using only style sheets). or 3) Switch to MovableType.

I'm leaning towards MovableType. I really like Greymatter's simplicity and its easy portability (just copy two directories and youve moved your blog to a new server). And MovableType gave me some installation trouble back when it was at version 2.2. But the new Trackback feature is kinda cool. And the stability is supposed to be way better. Hmmmmm. We'll see.
