Just when you think its over...
07:56 PM PST :: comments: 1I haven't had a headache since Monday. Three days pain free. And then I got two this morning. Grrrrrrr. Oh well. Ususally, when I haven't had a headache for several days, and then I get another one, that one turns out to be the last of the bunch. Hope that's the case this time too.
Trying to stay optimistic.

Can Anybody Run a Marathon?
10:31 AM PST :: comments: 2I had the pleasure of watching the Boston Marathon yesterday. What a crazy crazy idea. Every year, thousands of people arrive so they can subject themselves to 26 miles of grueling pain -- willingly! As I watched the race from the 24th mile sidelines, I noticed the array of thoughts and feelings that flew through me. The first place runner looked like a machine. His legs and arms looked mechanical and in perfect motion. His eyes were so determined, never losing sight of the road ahead. Watching him was inspiring. I thought to myself, I want to do that! I want to be as calm and collected as he is on the two-mile-away race to victory.
I've had a change of heart. Hour four of the race comes and goes and the streams of people running down the street seem endless. Is running the right word? These men and women were in PAIN. Limping, tearing up in the eyes, some even vomiting. They remained steadfast towards the goal, but they were hurting. And there was no cookie-cut shape to any of these people. Big, little, old, young... all shapes and sizes were pushing through this race to the finish line. It was at this time that I thought to myself, I could run a marathon if I wanted to. You don't have to be genetically designed and engineered to be a marathon runner. The only difference between me and these people flailing about in front of me is that I don't want to.
Maybe this is my way of excusing myself from training and prepping for an otherwise amazing feat. Maybe instead of saying that I could do it if I wanted to, I should go out there and do it.
I don't think so.

Unbearably Pleasant
12:45 AM PST :: comments: 0Chess, my niece, is such a Portland girl. Today, the weather was in the upper 60's and sunny. It was simply gorgeous, and one of the few such gorgeous days we've had in the past six months. Tree and I were playing outside with Chess, and she complains, "It's too hot out here. Can we go back inside?"
What kind of place is this that people want to go back inside becuase it is unbearably pleasant out? Where people would rather be out when it is dreary, overcast, or rainy than when it is sunny and warm?
